The February BoD meeting will be held Thursday, February 19th at 7 PM, just before the Annual Membership meeting at 7:30 PM. Both will be held at Amherst House and online via Zoom. E-mail us at HideawayHotline@gmail.com for the link.

2026 Annual Meeting topics currently include:
  • Treasurer’s report
  • 2025 Recap
  • Assigned parking: second spot
  • Rats report
  • 2026 Snow and ice storm
  • Membership questions and discussions
  • BoD nominations and election

Note that the annual assessment notice was delayed; instead of going out at the end of November, it went out in early January. The assessment due date was adjusted accordingly.

Note: In the Annual Assessment letter for 2026 the "Prior balance due" listed is actually the assessment amount due.

Downed tree work is complete, but some dying cherry trees remain to be removed and replaced.

This small quiet community is located on the southeast tract of Columbia, Maryland, in the Village of Kings Contrivance with easy access to Maryland Route 32, US 29, and I-95.

Designed and built in 1982 by one of Columbia's most award-winning developers, Howard Homes, the Hideaway consists of 167 all brick and block townhomes. A new private tot lot for children 6 and under is maintained by the community (Expected completion in Spring 2024). Columbia bike paths that traverse serene wooded areas along the Little Patuxent River are directly connected to the Hideaway. Howard County Recreation and Parks field and one of the Columbia pools (Huntington) are within short walking distance.

Trash

Trash goes out on Thursday evening after 6pm. If you do not have a trash can, please consider getting one. If not, please use thick black trash bags for your trash. We have a problem with vultures ripping open trash bags and making a huge mess around the neighborhood. Please be considerate of this. Also, if the trash collectors do not pick up something that you have left out, please take it back to your house and find another way of disposal. Large item pickup is available by calling 410-313-6444.

Alpha Ridge Landfill is a residential landfill. Please see the link for information about this. https://www.howardcountymd.gov/bureau-environmental-services/alpha-ridge-landfill

Recycling

Recycling goes out on Tuesday even after 6pm. Howard County does not take recycling in trash bags. Also, they will not take plastic wrap or Styrofoam. Please put these items with your trash. When the trash collectors leave items, please retrieve them and put them with your trash for Friday pick up.

Slide Weeks

During Holidays, trash and recycling are picked up a day later. Remember the acronym "Now My Trash Collections Is Later" to remember those weeks. Now (New Years Eve), My (Memorial Day), Trash (Thanksgiving), Collection (Christmas), Is (Independence Day), and Later (Labor Day).

Rats Are Spotted in the Hideaway

Hi folks—

Several residents have reported seeing rats in the Hideaway. Most of these sightings have been outside, but a one or two unlucky people have seen signs of them inside their homes. So far, the only reports have been from residents in the first block of Hideaway homes, 9701 – 9709 Softwater Way.

If you see rats in your area of the Hideaway, please send an e-mail to HideawayHotline@gmail.com. We—the Board of Directors—need to understand the extent of the problem so we can take appropriate action.

Parking

Please be advised that parking spaces within The Hideaway community will be painted on April 22nd and April 23rd. Your second reserved space will list the same number as your first reserved space. If your home has more than two vehicles, we will have a limited number of marked visitor spots in the neighborhood, please refer to the attached rules regarding parking in Hideaway visitor spots to prevent any unnecessary towing of your vehicles.
To ensure the work can be completed efficiently, all vehicles must be removed from the following areas by the times listed below:
Upper Softwater 9701 – 9755 & Summer Park Court:
Vehicles must be removed no later than 12:00 AM on April 22nd.
Any vehicles remaining after this time will be towed between the hours of 12:00am – 6:00am at the owner’s expense.
Lower Softwater 9824 -9875 & Rainleaf Court:
Vehicles must be removed no later than 12:00 AM on April 23rd.
Any vehicles remaining after this time will be towed between the hours of 12:00am – 6:0am at the owner’s expense.
Mid Softwater Area: 9802 -9818
Residents must remove their vehicles on both April 22nd and April 23rd to allow contractors full access. If this area is painted on April 22nd, then cars may return to their assigned parking areas that evening.
Additionally, please review the attached parking rules for The Hideaway. These rules will take effect on April 24th, and any vehicles in violation will be towed at the owner’s expense.
Landlords are asked to inform their tenants of these requirements. Residents are also responsible for ensuring that their guests are aware of these rules to avoid towing.
If you have any questions, please contact the Hideaway Board of Directors at hideawayhotline@gmail.com.

Volunteers are needed for the 2026 Hideaway Board of Directors

The HCA BoD is responsible for maintaining the Hideaway and making sure things run (reasonably) smoothly. It consists of three to 11 members (we currently have only two continuing BoD members!), with four officer positions and several other leads.
Most BoD roles require only a few hours of work each month (attending the 1½-hour monthly meetings and a couple of hours for whatever role the person takes) plus taking time to understand the By-Laws and associated other rules; BoD members must be able to dedicate time to assist in making decisions for the community and attend Board meetings.
If you are interested in serving on the BoD and have not yet submitted your name, please e-mail us or nominate yourself (or have someone else do so) at the annual meeting (our rules do not allow write-ins).
